What is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon?
An Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon is a specialist medical doctor and a specialist dentist who has completed a dental and medical degree in addition to at least six years of formal surgical training. The training requires a minimum of fifteen years to complete. Before being registered as a specialist with the Medical and Dental Boards of Australia, there is an extensive examination and assessment process, leading to the award of a surgical fellowship. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a medical and dental surgical speciality that deals with treating disorders and defects of the teeth, mouth, jaws, and face.
What is an Oral Surgeon?
An Oral Surgeon is a specialist dentist who has completed a dental degree, at least three years of formal surgical training, and a post-graduate clinical doctorate qualification. They have undergone an extensive examination and assessment process, and are registered as a specialist with the Dental Board of Australia.

Dr Lau is a registered specialist Oral Surgeon in Australia and New Zealand. She was raised in Singapore so she is fluent in English and Mandarin. She graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago in 2013 and was on the Dean’s List for clinical excellence in her final year. Upon graduation, she worked as a Dental and Maxillofacial House Officer at Dunedin Public Hospital. She went on to complete a full-time Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry Oral Surgery with Distinction, and then undertook a further three years of full-time specialist training, graduating with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Oral Surgery.

The patient portal is where as a patient of OFIS, you can complete relevant documents and access information relating to your upcoming treatment and hospital admission. Relevant questionnaires and post-operative instructions are also accessible.
Your procedure can be performed at the clinic, using either local anaesthesia (dental injections) or intravenous sedation for a calm “twilight sleep” experience. For procedures requiring general anaesthesia, we operate at Sydney Southwest Private Hospital in Liverpool, Camden Surgical Hospital, Victoria Street Private Hospital in Wollongong, Wollongong Day Surgery or Southern Highlands Private Hospital.

Any doctor who is a specialist or a surgeon needs to have specialist or surgical recognition with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). As a patient, you can go to the AHPRA website, type in the name of your doctor, and see what their registration status is, and if they are a specialist.

You will be provided with a quote for surgery after your consultation. If you are in a health fund, you may be entitled to a rebate.
It is possible to be put to sleep for your surgical procedure. The options are usually a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you.
If you are going to be awake (local anesthesia) it can be performed at the Liverpool, Narellan, or Wollongong praactice. If you are having treatment under intravenous sedation, it will need to be performed at Narellan or Liverpool. If you are having a general anesthetic, it will be performed at a local accredited private hospital. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you.
